Chemical Peel

WHAT IS A CHEMICAL PEEL?

It is a chemical solution used to improve and smooth the texture of the facial skin by removing the damaged outer layer. It can be used to treat a number of concerns including: reducing fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth, treating wrinkles, improving the appearance of acne scarring, reducing age spots, freckles and uneven skin tone, improving skin texture and color and even treats certain types of acne.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and takes 1-2 hours. Your plastic surgeon will evaluate your individual needs and determine if you will need to adhere to any skin regimes prior to your chemical peel. You should arrive with your face clean and free of makeup. Your plastic surgeon will apply a chemical solution to the affected area; you will feel a slight tingling to burning sensation as the chemical begins to take effect, followed by a neutralizer to remove the solution. You will then be instructed on how to care for your skin post treatment. You must adhere to your plastic surgeons aftercare instructions. New skin will begin to form in about 7-10 days.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

Side effects include, but are not limited to, irritation/itching, burning/stinging, flaking, scaling, blisters, scabbing /crusting, peeling, swelling, redness and possibly pain. The thick moisturizers used in the aftercare regime may cause blocked pores or acne.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS/COMPLICATIONS?

Any procedure carries some type of risk. The chemical peel is normally a safe procedure when it is performed by a qualified, experienced plastic surgeon. People with certain skin types may notice a change in skin pigmentation. People who have a history of cold sores/fever blisters, keloids or are on medications should inform their plastic surgeon. Some risks such as infection and scarring, although rare, are possible.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER?

It is important to avoid sun exposure after the chemical peel as your new skin is fragile and more susceptible to complications. Your face will be red and raw for several days. It will then begin to scale over as your body is forming new skin. After the scales begin to come off, your face may be sensitive and pink as your new skin emerges but this will fade in a few days to a few weeks to reveal your new radiant skin.

WHEN CAN NORMAL ACTIVITIES BE RESUMED?

It can take anywhere from 2-3 days to 2-3 weeks for your skin to rejuvenate, depending on the strength of the peel. For the stronger peels it is recommended that you take at least a week to allow your skin to recover from the raw and scabbing stage before returning to work.

WHAT IS THE DURATION OF RESULTS?

Results will last from several months to several years depending on the strength of the peel. Your genetics will also determine how long the results last as well as proper after care.
