Vascular Lesions

Back to Procedures List

What is a cutaneous vascular lesion?

Cutaneous vascular lesions are blood vessels of varying shape and size. Congenital lesions, such as port wine stains, begin in infancy and are found most commonly on the head or neck. Acquired lesions develop in persons of any age and may occur spontaneously or they may be caused by trauma, ultraviolet exposure or hormonal changes.

How does the laser work?

Lasers produce high intensity light that can be used to selectively heat blood vessels. A variety of machines can be used, although the effectiveness and side effects for an individual can vary. The advantage of lasers is the ability to target the blood vessel while leaving the surrounding tissue undamaged. As a result, the risk of scarring is extremely low.

Who is a candidate?

Anyone, male or female, who desires to attempt to remove or significantly lighten the presenting vascular lesions.

Which areas of the body can be treated?

Lasers may be used on all areas of the body. Your technician will determine the appropriate laser for your treatment.

How many treatments are necessary?

The number of treatments can vary. Typically a vascular lesion can be treated 3-5 sessions. However, if the lesions are extreme or cover a larger area, additional treatments may be necessary.

How is the procedure performed?

Treatment begins by cleansing the skin and applying a topical cream to numb the treatment area about an hour prior to treatment. This is to keep the patient comfortable during the procedure. A hand piece is used to direct a beam of laser light to the specific area of treatment. Some patients reported feeling a slight stinging sensation, similar to being snapped with a rubber band, during the treatment. This is usually followed by redness which can go away in 2-4 hours.

What should be expected during recovery from treatment?

After treatment is completed you should apply a topical to soothe the skin for a few days. Lesions will darken over the first 48 hours then begin to disappear over the next two weeks. Do not rub or pick at the treated areas.

When will results be apparent?

Final treatment results should be evident within 2-3 weeks after treatment but the results are permanent. In the meantime, normal daily activities can by resumed with only a slight redness evident at the treatment area.
